Since the earliest stages of my career, my translation specialism has been academic research and trade non-fiction in the fields of the arts, humanities and social sciences. My credentials for specializing in this area are the linguistic skills I acquired through completing a BA in French and Hispanic Studies and my subsequent involvement in academic research through completing a PhD in history and publishing research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
My research translation work has consisted principally of ongoing and long-term collaboration with agencies that produce English-language translations for publishers, journals and individual scholars. Every year I translate several dozen research articles that are destined for publication in peer-reviewed specialist journals.
My work as a translator of trade non-fiction, meanwhile, has taken the form of regular collaboration with a publisher of art and design books based in Spain. I have translated over a dozen single- or multi-author works from French or Spanish into English.
There are two translation challenges that I relish above all others. Firstly, I love working with texts that are highly complex from an analytical or conceptual point of view and that need to retain every last intellectual nuance in their translated form. Secondly, as an avid reader of non-fiction, the challenge of producing highly idiomatic and readable translations of intriguing subjects related to culture, creativity, society and politics is one that I am always delighted to take up.
If you have a French, Spanish or Catalan to English research or non-fiction translation project that could benefit from my expertise, do not hesitate to contact me.
Editing has become a neglected aspect of producing a text for publication. In a world where there are more people who speak English as a second, third or fourth language than there are native speakers, and in an economic environment in which businesses of all types prioritize cutting costs, it is tempting for organizations and individuals to cut corners and to not ensure that the texts that they publish conform to the highest linguistic and editorial standards.
The fact remains, however, that readers do detect a drop in production values when a text hasn’t been through professional editing processes. For some it’ll be niggly little spelling mistakes that prove to be a distraction. For others, sentences that don’t scan well due to faulty construction will be an obstacle to enjoying the text. And glaring factual errors undermine the authority of a work in the eyes of anyone who notices them.
Two types of text that are particularly prone to containing mistakes that need addressing by an editor are translations and documents that have been written by non-native speakers of English. In the first case, a hastily or carelessly produced translation can contain inaccuracies relative to the original document, not to mention tortured wording if sufficient attention has not been paid to stylistic issues by the translator. In the second case, the limitations of the author’s command of English can have a serious impact on the comprehensibility or readability of the text.
My skills as an editor have developed through several years of working with these two types of text. Through combining my excellent command of the English language with the experience of editing over two million words of academic and trade non-fiction texts to a publishable standard, I have developed into a highly accomplished editor who specializes in translations and texts written by non-native speakers of English or by individuals who are not professional writers.
If you have a text that is in need of refinement or even rescuing, I am able to provide you with the in-depth editing support required to make it convey its subject matter in a crisp and highly readable style, at the same time as ensuring accuracy of spelling, punctuation, grammar and formatting.
Ghostwriting is the practice of hiring a professional writer to produce a text on behalf of a person who lacks either the professional writing skills or the time required to produce a high-quality document. It allows publishers to combine the sales advantages of a book’s association with an established name with the production quality provided by a professional writer.
I have adapted the ghostwriting service for publishers of mainstream non-fiction works who operate in today’s multilingual global era. Through combining my professional expertise in writing with my proficiency in French, Spanish and Catalan and with my track record of developing imperfect English-language texts produced by non-native speakers, I am able to provide a first-class ghostwriting service for publishers that undertake editorial projects with authors whose first language is not English.
The process is a simple one. You provide me with notes and instructions written in Spanish, French, Catalan or faulty English, and you also specify the length of the required text. Working from these materials, I will then produce a professionally written, idiomatic and highly readable text that captures the author’s voice and message. The copyright and credits for the writing of the text will go to the author whose name appears on the front cover or byline, just as they do for all other authors.
This ghostwriting service offers some key advantages for authors and publishers in certain situations. Firstly, it removes the restrictions created by editing texts produced by authors whose first language is not English and who do not have native-level English-language skills. Instead of having to work within the confines of the imperfect text, the ghostwriter has more freedom to produce a text that is written to the highest stylistic and idiomatic standards. Secondly, for genres of text that must conform to stylistic conventions or cultural knowledge that are particular to the English-speaking world, ghostwriting can be better suited to producing a text that obeys those conventions.
If you are looking to produce a non-fiction text for publication in English and your author is not a native speaker of English, for reasons of suitability for the intended audience, stylistic quality and cost efficiency, my ghostwriting service is an ideal alternative to either writing a text in an imperfect English that will subsequently be edited or writing the text in a different language and then translating it into English.
